The Festival of the Sun

ree

Peru is famous not only for its iconic scenery, world-class surfling beaches, and Machu Picchu but also its array of cultural festivals that attract millions of travellers every year. One of these, possibly the most famous of them all, is called Inti Raymi also known as the Festival of the Sun.

Peru's Festival of the Sun, also known as Inti Raymi, takes place every year on June 24 and is a celebration of the Winter Solstice in tribute to the Peruvian Sun God known as Inti. It's a big cultural event for Peru, as it was banned by the Catholic Church and the Spanish colonisers in 1535 and its modern form of celebration wasn't rekindled until 1944. Ever since, the country has come together to celebrate the Festival of the Sun, which starts off in front of the Inca Temple of the Sun (known as Korikancha), before making its way to Plaza de Armas in Cusco, and finishing up in Sacsayhuaman.

According to historical records, the first Inti Raymi took place in the year 1412 when the Inca's prayed for the Sun God's return to earth. Dancing, singing, cultural plays, and delicious feasts occur amongst a glorious crowd of thousands and a seriously organised assortment of actors to the tune of 500! The event is so big, in fact, that there are grandstand seats going for up to $140 USD a pop during the final celebration, but given that this is an all-day event, it's worth getting a ticket to experience the entire spectacle from start to finish. We recommend getting to Sacsayhuaman around 8 am to find the best viewing spot in the stands with a stunning vista of the surrounding mountains.

Leading up to June 24, there is a week's worth of daily celebrations which include everything from musical concerts to traditional plays and street fairs; all in all, Inti Raymi is a proud celebration of Peru's past and is a beacon for those wishing to explore the beauty of the country's culture. Make sure it’s at the top of your wish list on your next visit to Peru!

A second chance to get back into nature

ree

If there's one thing the pandemic taught any of us during the lockdown, it's the importance of getting out of the confines of our homes and workplaces, and into the fresh air and vista of nature. There's only so many times one can walk around the block or jog along the same track, circle around the same city blocks and walk the same streets, before something intrinsic yells out to us "It's time to get out of here!"

The frustration of being stuck in lockdown has many of us daydreaming about adventures in the great outdoors; from the mountains to the sea, the deserts to the wild jungles, after the pandemic when travel opens back up, all of us will, at last, have a second chance to get back into nature and kick-start our new adventure.

ree

Valencia Travel Cusco offers a range of adventure and nature tours that will cure your need to break free of the mundane routine and to do something different. Whether it's hiking Machu Picchu, trekking the Colca Canyon, or exploring the Amazon jungle, there are so many tours to choose from the only problem you'll face is which one to do first! We have a few ways in which you can prepare yourself for your next trip to Peru, and since it's something you can start working on while the world still figures itself out, the best part is that once we are all out of the pandemic, you'll be more than ready to get back into nature on one of these incredible tours.

If we have learned anything during the pandemic, it's that our mental and physical health is something sanctimonious that needs to be prioritised. Psychologists have long-revered nature as one of the best healers of mental health when it comes to stress, anxiety, depression, and the need to unwind and reconfigure ourselves for a more healthy and fulfilling future.

Peru, as it is, has built a reputation for being the place to go to for an outdoor adventure that offers its guests, its seekers, the perfect haven for self-discovery and an experience in nature like no other place on the planet.

Coming out of the pandemic, expect Peru to be more popular than ever for those seeking a second chance to get out in nature as the world remembers just how powerful it can be for our health. Check out Valencia Travel Cusco's amazing tours here and start planning your post-pandemic adventure today.

Coronavirus update

The Government of Peru is looking to ease the current restrictions in place in an effort to stimulate tourism in the country.

Regardless, certain restrictions will still remain in place in an effort to protect both locals and international visitors. A PCR test and signed affidavit are still required before boarding your flight to Peru, but the two-week quarantine requirement has been lifted meaning that so long as you are free from COVID-19, you are free to explore the country including engaging in tours as you please.

Additionally, there are several key requirements you should be aware of:

  • Travellers from South Africa, Brazil, and India are not allowed to enter Peru at this point in time. Any Peruvians who are coming back to Peru having visited any of these three countries must immediately quarantine upon their return for a period of two weeks.

  • A mask is required at all times in public places, including public squares, bars, and restaurants, and in some establishments, double masks are required.

  • Evening curfews still apply in Lima, Cusco, and Arequipa from 9 pm until 4 pm, 7 days per week; these restrictions extend to car movements and businesses cannot open on Sundays.

  • Cusco's archaeological sites are now operating at 40% capacity.

  • Multi-day tours to the Inca Trail remain closed for now, however, the KM 104 one-day Inca Trail route remains open. If you are unwell or exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-1 9, you must not arrange or book any travel or accommodation in Peru.

If you do decide to travel to Peru, then like any other country, we strongly advise you to take out travel/health insurance and to be cognizant of any clauses pertaining to COVID-1 9

Valencia Travel Cusco will continue to provide updates from the Peruvian Government to keep our customers informed of the latest policies and procedures surrounding travel within the country. We look forward to welcoming you back to our country soon.

According to local and national authorities, it is of paramount importance for the islands to vaccinate the entire population. For the immunization days, the private sector, especially tour operators, has collaborated directly. Is that in the Insular province, tourism generates more than 85% of the local economy and has a high incidence at the national level? Galapagos marks the radical contrast in vaccination against COVID-19 in Ecuador. In the framework of the press conference of the National COE of Ecuador, the Minister of Tourism, Niels Olsen, confirmed that the obligation to present a negative PCR test to enter the country is eliminated for those passengers who have a vaccination certificate against the COVID-19. As they clarified, those who do not have the complete inoculation must undergo a test up to 3 days before boarding the flight and present the negative result upon arrival. Galapagos, the country's tourist and natural flagship to the world, would be 100% vaccinated at the end of June, which would allow it to show itself as a safe destination, also for its own population, and to guarantee its take-off towards recovery.

Our goal is to offer our clients a unique local experience in Chile by offering tailor-made programmes. Today we would like to introduce you to three interesting destinations in Chile. Let us inspire you for your next trip.

Aysén Region

Glaciers, fjords, and Chile's largest lake, Lago General Carrera, make this region a perfect destination to admire the beauty of Chilean landscapes.

ree

Those who want to enjoy the surroundings at their own pace can also take a road trip along the Carretera Austral and visit some of the numerous national parks. Those who love trekking or mountain tours, or who enjoy fishing, will find many opportunities here.

ree

A special attraction in this region is the "Capillas de Mármol" (Marble Chapels), limestone formations surrounded by the intense blue waters of Lake General Carrera.

This natural monument of Patagonia is situated on the route of the Carretera Austral and is a popular destination for enthusiasts of nature photography.

ree

Elqui Valley

The Elqui Valley, only 30 minutes by car from the city of La Serena and the Pacific coast, is a wonderful destination to relax and unwind. Picturesque villages allow the visitor to experience Chile in its purest form, surrounded by unique contrasting landscapes that combine the flair of desert, mountains and green wine valleys.

ree

The fertile valley between the Andes and the ocean is also the birthplace of the Nobel Prize winner for literature Gabriela Mistral and the home of the Chilean brandy and national drink, the Pisco. It is worth visiting one of the Pisco distilleries located along the way.

For sports and adventure enthusiasts, the valley offers hiking and cycling trails, horseback riding and tours with four-wheel drive vehicles.

ree

And, last but not least, once night falls, visitors can enjoy the incomparable view of the stars. The Elqui Valley is the perfect place for stargazing enthusiasts and is one of the world's first International Light Sanctuaries due to its low light pollution.

ree

Copiapó and Copiapó Valley

The tranquil town of Copiapó is located in the so-called "Small North" of Chile in the Atacama region, the driest desert in the world. The valley of the same name resembles an oasis where vineyards are located. Most of these vineyards are planted with grapes that are used to produce pisco, the country's national brandy. The landscape of the Copiapó valley stands out in contrast to the rocky desert.

ree

Copiapó is also considered one of the most important mining towns in northern Chile. The Mineralogical Museum of the University of Atacama in Copiapó is rated as one of the five best mineralogical museums in the world.

ree

In the surrounding area is the national park Pan de Azúcar. It is characterised by its endemic flora and fauna, penguins, archaeological remains and beautiful beaches.

ree

A special attraction in this destination is the "Blooming Desert", a natural spectacle that occurs together with the climatic phenomenon "El Niño", when exceptional rainfall takes place in the desert between September and November, transforming the desert into a sea of flowers.
